The aim of this paper is to discuss debt and sustainability issues in the context of the Stability and Growth Pact (SGP). A lot of work has been done to study these questions further. It is especially important to try to understand the politics involved. Despite the strong commitments, the outcome of the SGP has recently been less satisfactory. The question is why the performance has been so poor despite of all the political will invested.
